Fukushima's famed Cream Box, a bread treat exclusive to Koriyama, is now available nationwide. Thanks to 7-Eleven, the Milk Cream Box offers a taste of this local specialty for those unable to visit the region.
Fukushima’s Famous Cream Box Expands Nationwide as 7-Eleven Introduces the Milk Cream Box
In nearly every region of Japan, residents cherish local specialties and often attract visitors from other areas. In a SoraNews24 report, one such delicacy in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan's third-largest, is the "Cream Box," a bread-based treat exclusive to Koriyama City. Its popularity has made it a must-try for many travelers.
One reporter, K. Masami, had been eager to sample the Cream Box during a planned trip to Koriyama, but when her travel plans were canceled, she thought her chance to try it was lost. However, in a fortunate twist, 7-Eleven introduced a nationwide version of the treat on September 17 — the Milk Cream Box.
When Masami spotted it at her local 7-Eleven, the packaging proudly proclaimed it a "Fukushima Specialty," with signs stating "Fukushima-born Local Bread." It was priced at 138 yen, compared to the versions sold at Koriyama bakeries, which typically range from 100 to 150 yen.
Upon unwrapping the Milk Cream Box, Masami was impressed that the protective film didn't remove much of the cream. Its compact, boxy shape and petite, thicker size gave it a charming appearance. The bread was much creamier than she expected when she took her first bite. The dense, goopy cream had a light, refreshing aftertaste, making it feel like savory bread topped with cream rather than traditional sweet bread.
Creamy and Chewy: 7-Eleven’s Milk Cream Box Delivers a Unique and Subtle Sweetness
The slight crunchiness of the crust combined well with the chewy bread and smooth milky cream. While those craving a sugary dessert might find the sweetness subdued, for Masami, it was just right — so much so that she said she could have quickly eaten two in one sitting.
Masami noted that the Milk Cream box's creaminess sets it apart, making this local specialty comforting in a way she hadn't experienced before. Now that she's had a taste, she's more determined than ever to visit Koriyama to sample even more varieties—and perhaps stop by the local Poké-park.
