BYD may launch its smallest and most affordable electric vehicle, the Seagull, in Australia. Known for its exceptional sales in China, the Seagull could become the nation's most budget-friendly EV, challenging current market prices and offerings.
BYD Hints at Launching Affordable Seagull EV in Australia
BYD is planning to formally unveil a smaller electric vehicle—possibly the affordable Seagull EV—in Australia, which is even smaller than the Dolphin.
Electric automobiles made by BYD are famously cheap. The Seagull, its entry-level electric vehicle, is priced in China at less than $10,000 (69,800 yuan).
Seagull's Sales Success in China
In August, for the sixth month in a row, the Seagull was the best-selling electric vehicle in China. The number of Seagull models sold by BYD surpassed 400,000 in September, with an additional 43,425 units sold, Electrek reports.
Upon its 2023 introduction, the Dolphin was the most affordable electric vehicle in Australia. Since then, however, the MG 4 and GWM Ora have aggressively lowered their prices, undercutting the little EV.
Competitive Pricing in the Australian EV Market
With a price cut of $2,000 (AUD), BYD's Dolphin is now starting at $36,890. The MG 4 starts at $30,990 as part of a limited-time promotion.
"We always want to be competitive with our competitors, but we’re also cognisant of residual values," Smith said when asked if the company would seek to drop prices even further in order to become Australia's cheapest electric car again.
"We always want to put the brand first," Smith continued, emphasizing that BYD is "here for the long term." That may get hurt if prices were to fluctuate.
Potential Introduction of Smaller Models
A less expensive model is still within the realm of possibility. "Yes, there are plans for smaller vehicles, smaller SUVs as well," stated BYD's Australian import chief.
Compared to the Chevrolet Bolt EV (4,145 mm) and the Toyota Yaris (4,425 mm), BYD's Seagull is even shorter at 3,780 mm.
Seagull's Features and Design
The Seagull EV from BYD is offered in China with two different BYD Blade Battery options: 30.88 kWh and 38.88 kWh. The former has a maximum CTLC range of 190 miles (305 km), while the latter has a maximum range of 252 miles (405 km).
The Seagull was dubbed the "mini Lamborghini" in China because it was designed by Wolfgang Egger, a former Lamborghini designer.
The tiny EV may be little, but it packs a punch with the most cutting-edge software and networking technologies from BYD. The DiLink intelligent network connection is housed in the central 10.1-inch rotatable infotainment.
BYD's Expansion Plans in Australia
As previously reported, Smith's smaller SUV of choice will likely be the new Yuan Up, which will sit beneath BYD's highly regarded Atto 3 model.
The Shark PHEV, BYD's first pickup truck, will hit Australian roads this week, adding to the company's roster. Then, following the confirmed arrival of models from BYD's luxury Denza and Yangwang brands, the company intends to unveil its new Sealion 7 mid-size electric SUV.
