Abt Associates has announced that it is working with the Bank of Papua New Guinea to establish the PNG Digital Commerce Cryptocurrency Association.

The initiative will help the country to link up with the Global Blockchain Forum, an initiative led by the U.S. Chamber of Digital Commerce.

Under an MOU with the central bank, Abt Associates is harnessing blockchain potential to solve some of the major challenges in international development. The Central Bank of PNG signed the MOU with Abt Associates supported by the Australian government to launch the program through the Abt Australia-led PNG Governance Facility project.

The central bank and Abt, with funding from the Australian Government, are investigating how blockchain technology could be used to tackle some of the financial inclusion issues in the country.

“Blockchain has the potential to solve many challenges,” said Dr. Jane Thomason, CEO of Abt Australia. “Imagine a world where the poor can have an identity which enables access to services and financial inclusion through the use of blockchain technology. It holds tremendous possibilities to transform the way we address issues of poverty and health.”

Founded in 1965, Abt Associates seeks to solve challenges in health, social and environmental policy and international development. It particularly focuses on healthcare, education and workforce development, climate change and the environment, food security and agriculture, housing and communities, and survey and data collection.
