Burger King UK and PepsiCo have joined forces to create a new variant of the latter’s popular Doritos tortilla chips snack. The companies announced the release of Doritos’ Flame Grilled Whooper this week.
The new product is a co-branded snack where Burger King’s name is also visible on the packaging of PepsiCo’s Doritos chips brand. The new flavor was described to be very close to the taste of the burger joint’s flagship burger, which has a juicy beef patty, pickles, onions, and tomatoes.
The company said that despite the new Doritos’ unreal likeness, in terms of taste, to Burger King’s Flame Grilled Whooper burger, the tortilla chip is non-HFSS (high in saturated fat, salt and sugar). This makes the snack suitable for vegan individuals as well.
The new Doritos Flame Grilled Whooper was also launched in a grand way in the United Kingdom. The UK unit of Burger King put up a giant billboard beside one of its restaurants and played a flame-grilling ad on the screen.
This officially marked the launch of the new Doritos, which will only be available in the U.K. for now. People can buy the new snack in stores across the country, with each bag offering a free Whopper meal at Burger King. UK’s The Grocer reported that the Burger King and Doritos activity promo will run until Oct. 30.
“We are incredibly proud to unveil this epic collaboration,” Katie Evans, Burger King’s marketing director, said in a statement. “We have loved developing the iconic Whopper flavor that our customers know and love.”
Stephanie Herbert, Doritos’ senior marketing manager, also commented on the launch, “It is not often that two brands like Doritos and Burger King collide, and it has been hard to keep such an exciting partnership under wraps. We are now able to officially announce the launch of the new Burger King Flame Grilled Whopper Doritos – the much-loved burger, transformed, for the first time, into an irresistible tortilla chip.”
