Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly criticized Israel on Wednesday over its treatment of detained Gaza flotilla activists, calling the actions “abominable” in one of Canada’s harshest public rebukes of Israel in recent years. The comments came after Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir shared controversial footage showing activists kneeling on the ground with their hands tied behind their backs following the interception of a Gaza-bound flotilla.
The flotilla, carrying pro-Palestinian activists attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, was stopped by Israeli forces in international waters on Tuesday before being escorted to an Israeli port. The incident quickly drew international attention and intensified criticism of Israel’s handling of humanitarian missions linked to the ongoing Gaza conflict.
In a statement posted on social media, Carney described the treatment of civilians aboard the flotilla as “unacceptable.” He also highlighted that Canada had already imposed sanctions on Ben-Gvir, including a travel ban and asset freezes, due to what Ottawa described as repeated incitement of violence.
The Canadian government earlier announced plans to summon the Israeli ambassador in response to the released video, signaling growing diplomatic tensions between the two allies. Carney’s remarks reflect a noticeable shift in Canada’s foreign policy stance toward Israel since he became Prime Minister in March 2025, replacing Justin Trudeau as Liberal Party leader.
Canada has increasingly taken a firmer position on the Israel-Gaza conflict under Carney’s leadership. In September, Carney announced Canada’s intention to recognize Palestinian statehood, a move that sparked strong criticism from Israeli officials.
The latest dispute adds to mounting international scrutiny over Israel’s military operations and treatment of activists connected to humanitarian efforts for Gaza.
