Three classic “Grand Theft Auto” titles are reportedly being remastered. A new report suggests the project include “GTA 3,” “GTA: Vice City,” and “GTA: San Andreas.”
Following Take-Two Interactive’s Q1 2022 earnings call, part of the company’s financial report confirming that it has “three unannounced” remasters has been widely shared online. While Take-Two or any of its studios have yet to reveal what games are being remastered, many fans have speculated that they may include more “GTA” titles.
A new report from Kotaku now claims that the three unannounced remastered titles are all classic “GTA” games. Sources of the publication said the remastered “GTA 3,” “GTA: Vice City,” and “GTA: San Andreas” are already in the late stages of development.
The document from Take-Two listed the unnamed remasters as part of new iterations launching within its fiscal year 2022, but no specific release window was provided. However, the same report noted that the classic “GTA” remasters are planned to launch later this fall. After several plan changes, the report mentioned that the remastered classic titles could arrive in late October or early November. Note that the “GTA V: Expanded and Enhanced” edition is slated to launch on Nov. 11.
The remastered projects are reportedly being developed using the Unreal Engine, while one of the sources claiming to have seen a snippet that looks like a modded version of an earlier “GTA” game. While the developer purportedly plans to keep some of the classic elements in the games’ UI, some updates are also expected.
Meanwhile, the remastered “GTA 3,” “GTA: Vice City,” and “GTA: San Andreas” are expected to be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia, and mobile platforms. These new iterations are also rumored to become the first “GTA” games to come to the Nintendo Switch. However, the same report added that Rockstar is prioritizing the console releases, suggesting there is a chance for the launch on PC and mobile to be moved to 2022.
The three classic “GTA” titles were all released on PS2, the first Xbox, Windows PC, and Mac OS X. At the time, the hiatus in between games was not that long as it is today. “GTA 3” arrived in 2001, followed by “GTA: Vice City” in 2002, and “GTA: San Andreas” in 2004. Of these three games, only “San Andreas” was later ported to newer consoles PS3 and Xbox 360.
