Global Geo-political Series: Merkel mocks Trump wall during visit to Mexico

Yet another evidence came during the weekend that shows that the relation between Trump and the European leaders, especially Germany likely to remain strained under the new administration. The feud between the United States and Germany began during the US Presidential election campaign, during which President Trump was very critical of the German trade surplus with the United States. The feud deepened as President Trump ignored Angela Merkel’s call for a handshake during her visit to the White House. That snub was returned back by the newly-elected French President Emmanuel Macron, who evaded Trump at very last minute during the G7 summit to shake hands with Angela Markel and other leaders before returning back to Trump. President Trump has also criticized Merkel in the past for her open door refugee policies.

After G7 meeting, Merkel expressed her displeasure as the leaders and Trump failed to converge on the issue of climate change and later President Trump scrapped the participation of the United States in the Paris Climate Accord.

Over the last weekend, during her visit to Mexico, Angela Merkel delivered an indirect blow to Trump administration and President Trump’s one of the top promises to erect a wall along the Mexican border to prevent illegal immigration as well as Drug trafficking. During her speech in Mexico, Merkel said that walls do not solve the problems of immigration, “Obviously the main reason for people leaving must be addressed on site first, which means putting up walls and cutting oneself off will not solve the problem………..It's an issue you can study well in the history of China with the (Great) Wall of China, you can study it in the history of the Roman Empire. Essentially, only when great empires have managed to forge sensible relationships with their neighbors and to manage migration has it been a success."
