Hellmann’s testing temperature-detecting smart jars to reduce food waste

Hellmann’s mayonnaise in "smart jars."

Unilever’s Hellmann’s is testing a ‘smart jar’ with a label using temperature-sensitive ink that changes to reveal a hidden layer when in an environment below 5°C.

The innovative smart jar is part of Hellmann’s efforts to reduce food waste.

Few foods can last up to three days longer in a fridge set below 5°C, including milk.

Consequently, 3.1 million glasses of milk go to waste each day.

Trial prototypes with the unique label design by illustrator Ellen Porteus have been sent to Hellmann’s fans, food waste campaigners, and influencers nationwide to raise food waste awareness during Food Waste Action Week.

According to Catherine David, director of collaboration and change at Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), we need innovations like Hellmann’s pilot jar to help make simple changes that will pay dividends

She added that incorrect storage is a key trigger for food spoilage and getting the fridge temperature right can help food stays fresher.
