The Internet of Things will start relying more on Fog computing in order to meet the demands of efficiency that is becoming more difficult to fill with current, conventional means. Cloud computing simply cannot offer the same level of computing speed and response time that the IoT will require, but Fog computing can.
Tech Crunch notes how IoT is quickly becoming more like the Internet of Everything or IoE, and how the future is starting to look like a futuristic sci-fi movie where the lives of people revolve around a centralized digital interface. In any case, getting to this point will require processing and computing speeds that Fog computing is perfect for, and this is thanks to its decentralized processing architecture.
In terms of how processing works with Cloud computing, it offers a huge pocket of processing capability, which makes it perfect for providing IoT with the kinds of storage presence that it needs in order to draw terabytes of information from. However, Cloud computing also suffers from a slower response time because it is essentially a huge mass, which makes it sluggish.
In comparison, Fog computing is a far more fractured system, which can determine which processes require the most attention. This allows for a faster response time, which is critical in areas like medicine or engineering.
In the IoT Agenda website, Fog computing is described as a feature where “computing resources and application services are distributed in the most logical, efficient place at any point along the continuum from the data source to the cloud.” It basically takes specific information from the bulk that is Cloud storage in order to reduce the amount of time to find said information and then transport it to its destination. It might only be a few seconds or milliseconds of difference, but the impact can be huge, particularly in life and death situations.
