LG Uplus Corp. revealed this week that it will launch the Metaverse space for one of South Korea's prestigious educational institutions, Yonsei University. The mobile network operator in the country said the virtual campus will make use of its Uverse cyberspace platform.
LG Uplus' Uverse is a university-specialized metaverse platform, and it is set to open Yonsei University's virtual campus in September. This has been set up to enable contactless learning and open the door for large-scale events that can be participated in by students remotely.
According to The Korea Economic Daily, LG Uplus generated the Yonsei University metaverse on its Uverse after more than a month of planning. The main aim of this setup is to get past the limits of online learning.
The upcoming Yonsei University metaverse platform will have the capacity to accommodate up to 1,000 users. They can log in at the same time and convene at the campus' virtual auditorium and open-air theater. These spacious locations will also allow the holding of big events, including annual sports competitions, lectures, and the biggest cheering festival of the school, called the Akaraka.
"U-Verse is linking with 'LearnUs,' Yonsei University's learning management system, to play the role of a metaverse education platform that universities need most today," Prof. Park Tae Young, the head of the VCP (Virtual Campus Program) promotion committee, said in a press release. "We decided to do it together because we judged that we could perform optimally."
LG Uplus' executive director of the smart infrastructure project, Jeon Seung Hoon, also commented, "It is an honor to work together with Yonsei University, which represents Korea, to build a metaverse platform."
Finally, LG Uplus is linking the university's Metaverse to Yonsei Portal, the school's official academic management webpage, for easy accessibility for students and professors.
