Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has announced a major partnership with Reliance Industries to establish its first AI-enabled data center in India, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion across one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, Reliance Industries, led by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, will develop a 168-megawatt data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Meta will lease the facility and retain options to expand its capacity as demand for artificial intelligence and cloud-based services continues to grow.
The investment highlights Meta’s long-term commitment to India, a country that hosts one of the company’s largest user bases. Meta stated that India’s rapidly expanding digital economy, growing internet penetration, and increasing adoption of AI technologies make it a strategic location for infrastructure investments.
The move comes as India’s data center industry experiences strong growth. Market research from IMARC Group projects that the Indian data center market will nearly double, reaching approximately $13.11 billion by 2034. Rising demand for cloud computing, digital transformation initiatives, and AI workloads are expected to drive this expansion.
Meta and Reliance have been strengthening their partnership in the AI sector over the past few years. In August 2025, the companies launched a joint venture focused on developing AI platforms and enterprise solutions powered by Meta’s Llama large language models. The venture was backed by an initial investment of 8.55 billion rupees (around $89.67 million), with Reliance contributing 70% and Meta providing the remaining 30%.
The latest collaboration builds on an already strong relationship between the two companies. In 2020, Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, Reliance’s digital services arm, helping deepen its presence in India’s technology ecosystem.
The new AI data center is expected to support advanced AI applications, strengthen digital infrastructure, and accelerate innovation across India’s growing technology sector through 2026 and beyond.
