Microsoft wants 2024 to be the "year of the AI PC," to kickstart this vision, they have made a significant change to the keyboard on new laptops and PCs. Introducing the Copilot key aims to provide users with quick access to Microsoft's AI-powered Windows Copilot experience, all at the touch of a button.
Transformative Moment for Windows PC Keyboards
As per Bloomberg, the Copilot key marks the first major change to the Windows PC keyboard layout in almost three decades. Since the introduction of the Windows key, Microsoft has constantly strived to enhance user interactions with Windows.
The Verge noted that the Copilot key will serve as the entry point into the world of AI on the PC, revolutionizing how users engage with their devices.
Replacing the long-standing menu key (application key), the Copilot key will be next to the right-hand alt key on most keyboards.
Although the positioning may vary across OEMs and markets, Microsoft has standardized the key's placement to ensure ease of access. Previously, Microsoft added a dedicated Office key to its keyboards, and introducing the Copilot key further expands the array of functionalities offered.
Exploring the Windows Copilot Experience
By pressing the Copilot key, users gain instant access to the Windows Copilot, which comes integrated with Windows 11. This feature presents a ChatGPT-like chatbot that can assist and provide answers to queries and execute actions within the Windows system. However, if Windows Copilot is unavailable in a specific country, the Copilot key will launch Windows Search instead, ensuring users can still benefit from enhanced functionality.
While the Copilot key currently serves as a launch key only, Microsoft has not ruled out the possibility of future combinations with other keys. The existing Windows key is renowned for opening the Start menu and supporting numerous shortcuts to Windows features and functions. It remains to be seen whether the Copilot key will offer similar versatility in the future.
Exciting Collaborations Await
Microsoft has not confirmed the details of which OEMs will integrate the Copilot key, but announcements are expected in the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show and beyond.
Yusuf Mehdi, executive vice president and consumer chief marketing officer at Microsoft, envisions the Copilot key being unveiled on new Windows 11 PCs, including upcoming Surface devices, as early as later this month.
