French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI has acquired Austrian startup Emmi AI in a strategic move to strengthen its industrial AI capabilities across Europe. The deal, announced Tuesday, highlights the growing importance of AI-driven manufacturing and engineering solutions as Europe pushes to reduce dependence on U.S. and Chinese technologies.
Vienna-based Emmi AI is known for developing advanced AI models capable of simulating complex physical systems, including airflow, heat transfer, and material stress. The startup gained attention after raising €15 million in 2025, marking Austria’s largest funding round that year. Although financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, the partnership is expected to accelerate Mistral AI’s expansion into industrial sectors such as aerospace, automotive, and semiconductors.
Mistral AI said the acquisition aligns with its strategy of delivering customized AI solutions for European manufacturers. The company builds integrated AI systems where multiple models work together to improve factory operations. These systems can inspect production defects, control robotic equipment, and process logistics data simultaneously. By integrating Emmi AI’s physics-based simulation technology, Mistral aims to create smarter AI systems capable of interacting with real-world industrial environments more accurately.
The company pointed to its collaboration with Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML as an example of industrial AI success. Mistral-powered EUV lithography machines use computer vision models to identify engraving defects, reducing diagnostic times from several hours to only eight minutes. According to ASML CFO Roger Dassen, the improvement helps manufacturers avoid costly equipment downtime and reduce waste of expensive silicon wafers.
Mistral AI’s growing client portfolio already includes major companies such as Stellantis, Veolia, and defense drone manufacturer Helsing. CEO Arthur Mensch said the Emmi AI acquisition will reinforce Mistral’s position as a leading AI partner for Europe’s manufacturing industry while leveraging the region’s long-standing engineering expertise.
