‘Peaky Blinders’ Season 4 Spoilers: Cillian Murphy Teases “Returns to Roots”; Series Ends Badly for Tommy Shelby?

Cillian Murphy plays Tommy Shelby on BBC's 'Peaky Blinders'

‘Peaky Blinders’ season 4 is currently underway, with star Cillian Murphy teasing that the series is set to “return to roots.” It was speculated that the series may end badly for Murphy’s Tommy Shelby, who the actor described as a man unafraid of death.

Murphy hinted at a minor detail for the upcoming season of the British crime drama television series based on the exploits of the notorious Peaky Blinders gang operating in Birmingham, England following World War I. According to the Irish Mirror, Murphy and the rest of the cast are set to begin shooting for season 4 in the next couple of weeks.

The 40-year old Cork native teased, “In the classic gangster arc, the last season [Season 3] was sort of all about the wealth, the house and all that material stuff… This [season 4] is sort of a return to the roots, of sorts. That’s about as much as I can reveal.”

Murphy is set to return as Tommy Shelby, the leader of the titular criminal gang and patriarch of the Shelby family. He was a former British soldier, who fought at the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of Somme. His experiences during the war left him disillusioned and determined to help his family recover from the aftermath.

The star admitted that he found it difficult to mimic the Birmingham accent for his role but acknowledged that the people had been “sympathetic and forgiving” to his attempts. He said, “I’m not a great mimic, I can’t really do it immediately. But if you give me six weeks, I’ll give it a shot… I’ve always said it’s like going to the gym for your mouth. If you put in the time and you’ve got sort of an ear you should get some sort of an approximation.”

Tommy may have been on a personal journey to become a better man but major changes in his life proved to be more difficult than he bargained for. He witnessed his new wife Grace (Annabelle Wallis) shot dead by an Italian gangster at the Shelby Foundation Ball, and had to deal with the kidnap of his son Charlie (Wil Marwood) by stealing jewelry from the Russians’ vault to serve as ransom.

According to The Week, Murphy hinted that filming for season 4 is set to begin sometime in March 2017. During a previous interview, Murphy revealed that his character was unafraid of death. Tommy had a near-death experience in season 3 and it is all too possible that he may finally meet his demise towards the end of the series.

Creator and script writer Steven Knight revealed during a previous interview, "Never say never, but we feel that series five may be the last. We don't know for sure… Peaky is one of those things everybody loves and the response has been so magnificent on both sides of the Atlantic. I have got the end in my mind; whether that happens at the end of five is the question."

Knight revealed his ideas for ending the series saying, "I want it to end when the first air raid siren sounds in Birmingham.” He explained, “It is a story of a family between two world wars. It begins in 1919 when they have just come back from the war and the family's journey is towards legitimacy and respectability and to leave their past behind. The big question of the whole series is this: is that possible?"

‘Peaky Blinders’ season 4 is set to begin filming in the next few weeks. The fourth season was ordered by BBC together with season 5 last May 2016. No official release date has been announced as of the present.
