Wilmington, MA, March 14, 2018 -- Security Innovation, a pioneer in software security assessment and training, today announced that as part of its sponsorship of BSides Austin on March 8 and 9, all conference attendees had the opportunity – at no additional cost – to participate in its innovative CMD+CTRL cyber range training, the only cyber range focused exclusively on Web application security. Over the course of two days, scores of developers and security professionals put on their hacker hats to gain a deeper understanding of how cyber-attackers find and exploit vulnerabilities in insecure software applications.
Unique in the industry, CMD+CTRL is an immersive learning environment comprised of real websites, traffic, technologies, and vulnerabilities that represent actual application behavior. In the past year, Security Innovation has conducted more than 80 CMD+CTRL cyber range trainings around the globe for thousands of players at the world’s leading brands and industry conferences including DEF CON, OWASP AppSec California, BSides and others.

“As a 15-year innovator in software security, our mission is to provide customers with cutting edge solutions that improve our customers’ cybersecurity readiness. We built CMD+CTRL as part of that commitment, and teaching players to hone their hacking skills has become an exceptional way to give application developers the security skills necessary to meet today’s changing threat and attack landscape,” said Lisa Parcella, VP of Product Management at Security Innovation. “Reducing software security risk can be achieved effectively through immersive learning that teaches developers the value of secure coding to prevent application exposure.”
The realism of CMD+CTRL increases participant engagement and delivers the long-term memory benefits of “learning by doing." Coupled with assessment and reporting capabilities that offer insight into individual and overall team competencies, CMD+CTRL provides the type of training needed to overcome the security skills gap that most organizations face.
Kevin Poniatowski, a Customer Success Manager for Security Innovation with more than 10 years of application security experience, ran the CMD+CTRL training at the BSides conference. The Shadow Bank banking web application was used and each player vied to attain the maximum number of points available – 11,400. The first place finisher earned 9,045 points – and a remote-controlled drone. Competition was tight for second (6,020) and third place (5,995), with each player getting a swag bag stuffed with prizes. Most importantly, all players learned how to better protect their organizations from hackers.
