“Shrek 5” was announced as far back as 2016, but hardly any news about the much-anticipated final chapter of the ogre franchise has come out of DreamWorks. There are a few things that the folks behind the animated film have already said, though. One of these is how “Shrek 5” will reveal Shrek’s true origins. In related news, there is a petition that aims to make the main male characters of the film gay.
As Otaku Art notes, it has been nigh on two years since “Shrek 5” was announced and not a peep has come out about the movie. It’s likely safe to say that production has already started, especially if the studio wants to release the film in 2019. Since there have not been any announcements to the contrary, it’s also likely that Chris Meledandri, who produced “Despicable Me” and “Minions,” will be handling the project.
For now, there has yet to be an official confirmation as to the title or plot of “Shrek 5.” However, producer Jeffrey Katzenberg previously revealed that the franchise has already been planned for five chapters. In the fifth, the story is planned to include a tidbit as to why Shrek ended up living in his swamp.
There is no guarantee that this will still be the case in “Shrek 5,” but it would certainly help answer some questions that fans might still have about the ogre. Speaking of fans, though, there is currently a petition over at Change.org that wants to make both Shrek and Donkey gay. It was only started recently and is more than likely a joke, but six people have already signed it.
In any case, the planned premiere date of “Shrek 5” is still May 3, 2019. Unless announced otherwise, this is the date that fans may want to keep in mind.
