Whether or not “The Irregular at Magic High School” season 2 will be released is still up for debate. But is quite certain that, if the anime series gets renewed, the story begins with Tatsuya and Miyuki embarking on their sophomore year.
After the first season concluded in 2014, the studio 8-Bit produced a sequel movie subtitled “The Girl Who Calls the Stars” that premiered in 2017. It somehow served as a sequel to season 1 and covered events from light novel volumes 10 and 11 where fans saw the main protagonists complete their first year at the National Magic University Affiliated First High School. It is then logical to assume that “The Irregular at Magic High School” season 2 if it ever gets released, will pick up the story to when Tatsuya and Miyuki start their sophomore year.
This also means that the second anime series installment would most likely base the upcoming episodes starting in the 12th volume of the light novel that is popularly known as the “Double Seven Chapter.” In this case, the timeline in “The Irregular at Magic High School” season 2 would begin in April 2096. The synopsis of volume 12, or the “Double Seven Chapter,” reveals that it is focused on the school’s new curriculum, Magical Engineering Course, and other significant changes in the system imposed following Tatsuya’s achievements.
To recap, the series revolves around the mixing of magical abilities and improving them with advanced technology. It became a common practice after the fictional World War 3. The National Magic University Affiliated First High School divides freshmen students between high and low achievers based on their performance on a very tedious entrance exam. Tatsuya ended up in the bottom half belonging to the group of students called “Weeds” (Irregulars) while Miyuki belonged to the high achievers or the “Blooms" (Honor Students). So curriculum changes in “The Irregular at Magic High School” season 2 are drastic but fair. However, students from elite families will loathe these improvements and cause major trouble in the institution.
There are conflicting reports on whether or not “The Irregular at Magic High School” season 2 has been confirmed. Some reputable news sources say it was already announced, but a quick look in the series official website will show there is no official announcement posted yet.
