With a series of tweets, President Donald Trump poured cold water over the hot speculations that has been brewing for months that there are tapes of conversations between him and the former FBI director James Comey. After firing the then FBI director James Comey, President Trump tweeted that James Comey better hopes that there are no tapes of his and the director’s conversation before he starts leaking to media/press. In a congressional hearing, earlier this month, James Comey admitted that he leaked memos of conversation between him and President Trump to media via a friend of his. Mr. Comey said that President Trump’s tweets on tapes prompted him to go for leaks.
President Trump tweeted with regard to tapes, “With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea......whether there are "tapes" or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings.”
While the President does have the power to fire FBI directors, President Trump’s firing of FBI Director Comey created quite a furor in the media. His critics are now accusing him of an Obstruction of Justice.
