After weeks of speculation, the White House confirmed Amy Gleason as the acting administrator of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The Trump administration had been pressed to reveal the individual leading the cost-cutting initiative after a court filing stated that billionaire Elon Musk, despite President Donald Trump’s claims, had no authority over the program.
Gleason, a former healthcare technology consultant and U.S. Digital Service (USDS) official, previously served in Trump’s first administration. She has been working as a senior adviser since last month, according to her LinkedIn profile. A White House official stated she has been liaising with other agencies, though it remains unclear when she officially assumed the role.
DOGE, which evolved from the USDS after Trump's January 20 inauguration, is aggressively reducing the federal workforce. The legality of DOGE’s access to government payment systems is being challenged in court, with Musk’s involvement a key issue. The administration maintains that Musk is an unpaid "special government employee," a temporary advisory role.
Gleason’s background includes consulting in healthcare technology and leadership roles in venture capital and rural healthcare. A former USDS staffer indicated she returned to facilitate the transition ahead of Trump’s second term. The executive order creating DOGE states that the administrator reports directly to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
As legal battles unfold, the administration’s restructuring efforts remain under scrutiny. Gleason has yet to comment on her appointment.
