Noor Mirza
Researcher, Balsillie School of International Affairs
Noor Mirza completed her Master’s of Global Governance candidate at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, in Waterloo Ontario. She did her B.A in Political Science and History (co-operative education) with a specialization in Global Governance and a French minor from the University of Waterloo. Her research interests relate to international relations in the Middle East and South Asia, with a focus on war and conflict post 9/11, and the political effects of conflict in these regions. Noor completed an Honour’s thesis during her undergraduate studies under the supervision of Dr. Aaron Ettinger, which looked at the ideological considerations which shape foreign policy practises, especially those which resulted in the invasion of Iraq in 2001. Her thesis surveyed the relationship of the Clash of Civilizations thesis to post 9/11 foreign policy and the treatment of political verbiage to frame not only said conflict, but how foreign policy practioners articulated solutions to deal with it. She is also interested in how multilateral institutions can shape what the international response to crisis is. She recently attended the International Monetary Fund/World Bank spring meetings as a Fellow of Washington D.C based think tank, New Rules for Global Finance and is interested in exploring loan restructuring, and development in the Middle East and South Asia.
Noor completed another Honour’s thesis in History in her final year of undergraduate studies under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Hunt, which looked at the rise of populism in the United States during the presidency of Andrew Jackson, and the subsequent birth of Jacksonianism. This thesis explored the relationship between Jacksonian political thought and republicanism and the rise of Donald Trump in relation with Jacksonian principles.
Noor was a Research Analyst at the Ministry of Canadian Heritage and worked within an advisory team to the Minister of Canadian Heritage regarding Frankfurt Book Fair and Canada as Guest of Honor country in 2020. She also served on a team providing considerations on the China-Canada Free Trade Agreement.
She served as the President of the Political Science Student Association and the Vice President of the Arts Student Union during her undergraduate studies and was the Co-op Ambassador for the University of Waterloo’s Federation of Students. She is the Editor in Chief of the Political Science Undergraduate Journal, a flagship project of the Political Science Student Association.

Canada Research Chair in Environmental Influences on Water Quality, University of Winnipeg
Canada is teeming with lakes, streams, and wetlands. Clean, healthy fresh waters support biodiversity and provide extensive health, economic, and cultural benefits to Canadian communities. However, rates of climate change in northern boreal regions are among the highest anywhere on Earth. Rising temperatures, changes to precipitation, and declining snow cover will fundamentally alter how water and chemicals move through the environment, and could threaten our valuable aquatic resources.
How will environmental pressures, including climate change, impact water quality? Dr. Nora Casson and her team are working to unravel relationships between water and nutrient cycling, to understand how patterns and processes vary across the landscape and how human activities impact the surface waters that drain forested ecosystems.
A robust understanding of the environmental controls on nutrient cycling in the boreal region is critical for informing decision-making aimed at safeguarding water quality. Dr. Casson's research expands our understanding of how human activities impact boreal ecosystems by diving deep into the mechanisms that underpin observed changes and also by looking broadly at controls on regional-scale patterns. Through interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers, the results of Dr. Casson’s research inform management decisions to protect ecosystems and water quality.

Nourchen Ben Fatma

Dr Nourchen Ben Fatma is an architect. She holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in architecture from the Doctoral School in Architectural Sciences and Engineering of Tunis (Ed SIA). She has been a lecturer at the School of Architecture, Audiovisual and Design (ESAD) since 2013, and at the National School of Architecture and Urbanism of Tunis (ENAU) since 2020. Since her appointment as research partner in the Heritage Borders of Engagement Network (ENGAGE) in April 2021, her research has focused on heritage through the lens of building know-how, tectonics/ materiality and ecology. Through this affiliation, she has been involved in many international research programs and collaborations. She was also a postdoctoral fellow at the Virtual Fellowship Program of Heritage with the University of Liverpool (2022). Nourchen was the project manager for the Tunisian component of the Jusour project as well as the executive producer of the Tunis and Kairouan documentaries.

Nuno Gil

Nuno is a Professor of New Infrastructure Development. Nuno was born in Lisbon, Portugal, where he trained as a civil engineer and worked as a project manager. Nuno joined The University of Manchester in 2002, after earning a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of California at Berkeley; he moved to the Manchester Business School in 2004.
Nuno focuses his research on the design of structures and processes can bring the best of people in consensus-oriented (pluralistic) settings, and make the world a better place to live and share with future generations. Nuno has worked or done research with various organizations including CH2M HILL, Intel, Rolls Royce, BAA (now Heathrow Ltd), BP, Manchester City Council, Network Rail, London2012, Crossrail, High speed 2, Thames Water, and the UK Cabinet; Larsen &Toubro and DFCCIL (India), World Bank, UNHabitat (Egypt), JICA (Japan); Lamata (Nigeria); and UNRA and KCCA (Uganda).
In 2009, Nuno was the lead editor of the special issue of California Management Review Infrastructure meets Business: Building New Bridges, Mending Old Ones in 2009. Nuno co-founded and acted as research director of the MBS Centre for Infrastructure Development between 2013 and 2016. Nuno is the leading author of two books published with the Project Management Institute - Building Options at Project Front-end Strategizing (2014, with Guilherme Biesek) and Megaproject Organization and Performance: The Myth and Political Reality (2017, with Colm Lundrigan, Jeff Pinto, and Phanish Puranam). Nuno Reis

My research is focused on the development of new microprocess engineering and process intensification concepts applied to biological and pharmaceutical systems. The multidisciplinary research themes span from microfluidics, surface chemistry, crystallisation, fermentation, cell culture, chromatography, electrophoresis, virus inactivation and clinical diagnostics areas. Main goal is to deliver disruptive technologies to fill up main technological gaps and unmet needs in high-value market sectors of (bio)pharmaceuticals and healthcare diagnostics. This requires a multi-scale approach by understanding the processes at meso-, micro- and nano-scale, all supported by state-of-the-art analytical tools and numerical modeling tools such as CFDs.

Nural Cokcetin
Research scientist, University of Sydney
Dr Nural Cokcetin is a microbiologist based at the University of Sydney. Her research interest is in understanding the relationship between bees, the environment and medicinal honey with the aim of supporting the apiary industry, pollination, and human health. Nural leads research on the bioactive properties of honey, specifically into its use as a topical treatment for infections caused by antibiotic resistant superbugs and as a prebiotic food to promote a healthy gut microbiome. She works closely with the Australian beekeeping and wider agricultural industries to ensure her research leads to improved health outcomes and other benefits for society and industry.
Nural is equally passionate about doing research that drives positive changes as she is about communicating her research as broadly as possible. She is a frequent public speaker on topics around medicinal honey, bees, gut health and antibiotic resistance. Nural has received many awards for her research excellence and impact, as well as her dedication to the promotion of science. She was named the best young science communicator in Australia and the international runner-up in the FameLab science communication competition and one of the TEDxSydney Top Five Young Change-Makers. She appears regularly in the media as a thought leader in her research areas.
Although not that kind of doctor, Nural is often heard dishing out her favourite bit of advice “have you tried putting honey on that?”

Es ingeniera de Telecomunicación por la UPM y doctorada en Inteligencia Artificial por el Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). La Dra Oliver tiene 25 años de experiencia investigadora en MIT, Microsoft Research (Redmond, WA) y como la primera directora científica mujer en Telefónica I + D (2007-2016) y la primera Directora de Investigacion en Ciencias de Datos en Vodafone a nivel mundial (2017-2019).
Su trabajo en el modelado computacional del comportamiento humano usando técnicas de Inteligencia Artificial, la interacción persona-maquina, la informática móvil y el análisis de Big Data -especialmente para el Bien Social- es conocido internacionalmente con más de 180 publicaciones científicas, citadas más de 21.000 veces. Once de sus artículos científicos han sido nominados o ganadores de premios a mejor articulo científico.
Por su expertise, ha sido nombrada Comisionada para Presidencia de la Generalitat Valenciana para Inteligencia Artificial y las Ciencias de Datos en la lucha contra el COVID-19. Dentro del comisionado, ha creado un grupo de trabajo formado por más de 20 experto/as en Ciencias de Datos trabajando en 4 áreas: el modelado de la movilidad humana a gran escala; el desarrollo de modelos computacionales epidemiológicos, los modelos predictivos y la ciencia ciudadana, a través de una de las mayores encuestas ciudadanas sobre COVID-19: https://covid19impactsurvey.org con más de 700,000 respuestas. También colideró el equipo ValenciaIA4COVID en su participación en el 500k XPRIZE Pandemic Response Challenge, donde resultaron ganadores mundiales. Es la primera vez que un equipo español gana una competición XPRIZE.
Nuria es la única investigadora española reconocida por el ACM como Distinguished Scientist y Fellow al mismo tiempo. También es Fellow del IEEE y de la Asociación Europea de Inteligencia Artificial. Ha recibido un Doctorado Honoris Causa por la Universidad Miguel Hernandez. La Dra Oliver es académica de numero en la Real Academia de Ingenieria y miembro electo de la Academia Europaea y de CHI Academy, donde es la única española.
Miembro del comité científico asesor de varias universidades europeas, de la Fundacion Gadea Ciencia, de Mahindra Comviva y del Future Digital Society, entre otros. Además, asesora al Gobierno de la Comunidad Valenciana, de Catalunya, de España y a la Comisión Europea en temas relacionados con la Inteligencia Artificial. Ha sido miembro de un Global Future Council en el Foro Económico Mundial y ha sido Consejera independiente para Bankia hasta su fusión con CaixaBank. Recientemente ha sido nombrada por el Banco Central Europeo la representante española en el grupo asesor (theme advisory Group) para el diseño de los nuevos billetes de euro.
La Dra Oliver es miembro del comité de programa de los principales congresos internacionales en sus áreas de investigación. Asimismo, ha sido miembro del comité organizador de 20 congresos internacionales y es miembro del comité editorial de cinco revistas internacionales.
El trabajo de la Dra. Oliver ha sido reconocido internacionalmente con numerosos premios. Se graduó número uno de su promoción en la ETSIT de la UPM y recibió el Primer Premio Nacional de Telecomunicación (1994). Es la primera investigadora española en recibir el MIT TR35 Young Innovator Award (2004) y el Rising Talent Award por el Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society (2009). Además, ha recibido el Ada Byron Award a la Mujer Digital Europea del Año (2016), la Medalla al Mérito Empresarial y Social de la Generalitat Valenciana (2017), el Premio Nacional de Informatica (cat. Angela Ruiz Robles, 2016), el premio Ingeniera del Año por el COIT (2018), el premio Data Scientist of the Year (2019), el premio Concepcion Aleixandre a la Científica Valenciana en la categoría de Honor (2020) y el Premio Jaume I en la categoría de Nuevas Tecnologías (2021), entre otros.
Nuria ha sido nombrada una de las 11 personas más influyentes en Inteligencia Artificial en el mundo por Pioneering Minds (2017), una de las 13 maravillosas mentes de la tecnología en España por EL PAIS (2017), una directora tecnológica lider (El PAIS , 2012), una de los “100 líderes del futuro” (Capital, 2009) y una de los “40 jóvenes que marcaran el próximo milenio” (El PAIS, 1999), entre otras distinciones.
Es inventora de 41 patentes. Su trabajo ha contribuido a la mejora de servicios, la creación de nuevos servicios, la definición de estrategias empresariales y la creación de nuevas compañías. Es ponente invitada con frecuencia tanto en congresos cientificos como congresos tecnológicos.
Además de su trabajo cientificos, la Dra Oliver dedica parte de su tiempo a la divulgación científico-tecnológica y a inspirar a los jóvenes y especialmente a las chicas a estudiar carreras tecnológicas. Ha impartido charlas a más de 10000 adolescentes, ha contribuido al libro “Los nativos digitales no existen” (Deusto, 2017) con el capítulo “Eruditos digitales”, ha escrito artículos para EL PAIS, The Guardian, TechCrunch entre otros y ha sido co-organizadora de grandes congresos con miles de asistentes, como el primer evento TEDxBarcelona dedicado a la educación emergente, el I Congreso Internacional de Inteligencia Artificial y el I Congreso Internacional sobre el Envejecimiento. Sus charlas en WIRED, TEDx y eventos similares han sido vistas miles de veces.
Nuria cree firmemente en el valor de la tecnología para mejorar la calidad de las personas, tanto individual como colectivamente, y dedica su vida profesional a conseguirlo.
