The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has shifted Saudi Arabia’s 2027 Asian Cup to a December start, citing regional conditions that have disrupted travel and complicated preparations for the 24-team tournament.

The competition had been scheduled for Jan. 7, 2027, through Feb. 5, 2027. Under the new calendar, matches are due to begin Dec. 23, 2027, and finish Jan. 21, 2028. The AFC said Tuesday it chose the revised window after consulting the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the local organizing committee.

The AFC cited regional developments and resulting complications for travel and event logistics. Al Jazeera reported that Yemen’s Houthis have repeatedly attacked Saudi Arabia since September. The AFC said the change was intended to account for the needs of teams, officials, spectators and others involved in the event.

Japan Football Association President Tsuneyasu Miyamoto had previously questioned whether the event could be held on its original timetable, as recounted in coverage of his schedule concerns.

The revised schedule now awaits FIFA’s approval.
