AI-generated pictures circulated as purported evidence of an attack on an elderly couple during France’s Oct. 17 unrest, lending visual weight to an allegation that authorities had not confirmed.
TF1 Info reported that an X post carrying one of the images had more than 3 million views by Oct. 19. That figure reflects the post’s reach at the time of its report, not a current total.
The allegation preceded the pictures. During an Oct. 17 broadcast, BFMTV police and justice commentator Dominique Rizet said a police source had described an attack on a couple around 80 years old near Place de la République in Paris. Rizet’s account was not a confirmed police finding.
The Paris prosecutor’s office told TF1 Info on Oct. 19 that it had no information supporting the alleged assault and urged caution. The office’s response does not establish whether a separate attack occurred. The identities of any victims or attackers remain unverified.
Several outlets examined the pictures shared with the claim. TF1 Info and Newtral reported that OpenAI’s verification tool detected AI provenance signals in images they checked. EFE Verifica also reported a SynthID signal in an image it examined. The checks concern the images’ origins; they do not determine whether the alleged assault happened.
FRANCE 24’s Observers team traced one picture to a montage labeled as AI content and published by Infos-Israel.news. FRANCE 24 also reported that far-right accounts paired the pictures with unsupported claims about the supposed victims’ religion and the attackers’ identities.
The images spread as protests over rising living costs were accompanied by clashes and looting, according to EFE Verifica. Following the weekend unrest, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said on Oct. 19 that prefects would select areas for partial local curfews.
