The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) said members had announced $83.5 million in new commitments to its Project Preparation Special Fund, expanding support for early work on infrastructure projects across the bank’s membership.
AIIB put the fund’s combined contributions and commitments at about $213 million. That total is not a cash balance: the bank’s interim financial statements recorded $129 million in contributions received as of June 30, 2026. AIIB did not say how much of the newly announced commitments has since been paid.
By September 2026, grant approvals totaled $110 million for 45 projects in 13 AIIB member countries, the bank reported. The grants pay for work needed to prepare projects and support their early implementation. Eligible activities include assessing whether a project is viable, technical design, environmental and social reviews, consultation with affected communities, procurement advice and training.
The fund focuses particularly on less-developed members. Its rules allow support for AIIB members eligible for financing from the International Development Association (IDA), as well as other members with significant development needs and capacity constraints. IDA-eligible members receive preference.
AIIB said the facility has helped project teams account for climate resilience, sustainability, digital innovation and institutional capacity during project preparation. Established in June 2016, the fund relies on voluntary contributions from AIIB members.
The bank said seven members had contributed to or made commitments to the fund, but did not name those behind the latest commitments or provide a breakdown. AIIB said it would continue discussions with current and prospective contributors ahead of its 2027 Annual Meeting in Azerbaijan; it did not announce a date for the meeting.
