During its first half-year, AT&T’s LegalEdge group worked on nearly 100 matters as AT&T and OpenAI explore AI tools to help lawyers retrieve knowledge held across the company.
The unit launched in January 2026. It brings lawyers and paralegals together with legal operations personnel and e-discovery specialists, working alongside AT&T attorneys and outside counsel.
Assignments span fact-finding, document review and production, research and drafting. The group also builds case timelines and witness materials, keeps privilege logs, coordinates projects and seeks process improvements.
Brendan McMurrer leads the unit and is an AT&T vice president and associate general counsel. AT&T Assistant Vice President Ava Guo, a senior legal counsel, focuses on technology, processes and staff development. LegalEdge also absorbed her e-discovery and legal technology group.
AT&T and OpenAI announced their collaboration on Oct. 8. The agreement aims to help the legal department draw on knowledge held across AT&T. Attorneys retain legal judgment and determine the role AI agents play in their work. AT&T’s Lead Attorney role description calls for staff review and quality controls when AI tools assist with legal work.
