About 14 pupils from an Islamic school were abducted while harvesting maize in Niger State, Anadolu Agency reported, as police said joint security teams were working to rescue them.

Anadolu reported that the abduction occurred Saturday, Oct. 31, at a farm in Tungan-Bako village, in Rafi Local Government Area. Police confirmed the kidnapping. Niger State police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said security teams were working to rescue the pupils and that police would provide more information.

Ibrahim Aliyu told Anadolu Agency his 12-year-old daughter was among those taken. “We don’t know where they are or what is being done to them,” he said.

Another parent, Muinat Alimi, said the abductors were seeking food supplies and ransom, Anadolu reported.

School proprietor Malam Aminu Bako said the pupils were all girls ages 10 to 15. He had not spoken with the abductors, but said he had heard they contacted community leaders and made demands, the agency reported.
