The All Progressives Congress (APC) says 21 Adamawa local-government chairmen and 226 councillors elected on Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) tickets have changed party affiliation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.

Adamawa APC publicity secretary Victor Dogo said the officials had joined the APC. He also included area development administrators in his count.

Premium Times reported that resignation letters from Yola North Chairman Jibril Jimeta and Maiha Chairman Tijani Atiku were dated Oct. 19. It said Mubi North Chairman Musa Hassan’s letter was acknowledged that day. The switches became public Oct. 20, the outlet reported.

Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) Chairman Mohammed Umar announced in June that the PDP won all 21 chairmanship races and 226 councillorship contests in the state.

Gov. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri announced in a state broadcast on Feb. 27 that he was leaving the PDP for the APC. Dogo told Premium Times that the local officials were aligning with Fintiri.

Galadima Aminu, the APC’s Adamawa governorship candidate, said the switches would strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. A statement attributed to Aminu and signed by media aide Adamu Sambo called the defections “a major political development for our party.”

Belmont Dogo, the PDP’s state chairman, told Premium Times his party was “not alarmed.” He cited Fintiri’s 2019 governorship victory, saying the PDP then had no elected local-government chairmen.
