An Assam government eviction campaign in Dhubri has brought down hundreds of homes and displaced 4,000 people, Al Jazeera reported, citing local media for the count.

Al Jazeera said most of those displaced were Bengali-speaking Muslims.

The Assam government says the affected families do not legally live in the area. Dhubri is in Assam, a state in northeastern India. Al Jazeera described the demolitions as part of the state's effort to evict those families.
