An Al Jazeera program published Oct. 31 reported that attackers took assets worth about $6.3 billion from Binance clients, drawing attention to exchange security and the confidence of crypto investors.
The segment identified Binance as the target and characterized it as the biggest exchange in the digital-asset market. It also relayed analysts’ suspicion that the attackers had backing from North Korea’s government.
Some critics cited in the broadcast favored stricter oversight, arguing that new rules could help regain investors’ trust. The program also considered the defenses available to crypto platforms and whether exchanges can block comparable attacks.
Host Mohammed Jamjoom led a panel that included Lee Reiners, a Duke University lecturing fellow and former U.S. Federal Reserve Bank examiner; Geoff White, an investigative journalist and author of “The Lazarus Heist”; and Anupam Chander, a Georgetown University professor of law and technology who specializes in global regulation of new technologies.
