Australia’s call for reduced U.S.-Iran tensions will remain part of Canberra’s diplomacy after the U.S. midterms, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. (ABC).

Albanese called the vote “very significant,” ABC reported. The broadcaster said he described the Iran war and U.S. tariffs on trading partners as “major factors” in the result. ABC reported that the results were set to give Democrats control of Congress, dealing a setback to President Donald Trump and Republicans.

Albanese’s comments followed his attendance at a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in the Caribbean earlier in November. He said the midterms came up at the gathering.

Albanese said participants shared the goal of ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He said Australia would continue diplomatic appeals to Washington to reduce tensions and that he had made the case directly to Trump.
