Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) shares dropped as much as 5.4% during Thursday's session after news emerged that longtime Google AI leader Jeff Dean is leaving the company to launch a new artificial intelligence startup, adding to investor concerns over ongoing talent departures in the competitive AI industry.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Dean is teaming up with former Google AI executives Oriol Vinyals, Quoc Le, and Sanjay Ghemawat to establish Discovery Loop, a public-benefit corporation focused on accelerating scientific and engineering breakthroughs through AI-driven automation. The startup plans to create technology capable of automating complex, multi-step research processes, with future applications spanning machine learning, hardware development, drug discovery, and clean energy.
Alphabet will remain closely involved with the venture as a founding investor and cloud computing partner, alongside seed investors Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures. Dean, Google's 30th employee who joined the company in 1999 and co-founded Google Brain in 2011, said the team wanted to develop specialized research infrastructure outside Google's existing framework, which is primarily designed for large-scale consumer products, search, and advertising.
The latest departures follow a series of notable AI talent losses for Google, including Character.AI co-founder Noam Shazeer's move to OpenAI and Nobel Prize-winning scientist John Jumper's transition to Anthropic. The continued competition for top AI researchers has drawn increased attention from investors as the race to develop advanced AI models intensifies.
At the same time, Google announced a significant restructuring of its AI leadership. CEO Sundar Pichai and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis unveiled changes designed to strengthen Alphabet's focus on artificial general intelligence (AGI) and frontier AI models. Hassabis will become Chair of Google DeepMind and Alphabet's Chief Scientist while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs.
Meanwhile, Google DeepMind Chief Technology Officer Koray Kavukcuoglu has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind, where he will oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and developer teams. Pichai praised Dean and Ghemawat for their contributions over nearly three decades, highlighting their work on Google Search infrastructure, Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), and modern deep learning, while confirming Alphabet will continue collaborating with Discovery Loop through research and cloud partnerships.
