American Financial Group plans to pay about $290 million to common shareholders in a special dividend, giving investors a one-time distribution alongside the company's quarterly payout.

The payment is $3.50 per share. Shareholders listed on the company's records Nov. 16 qualify, and payment is scheduled for Nov. 25. The company also lists Nov. 16 as the ex-dividend date.

AFG's latest regular dividend was $0.97 per share, paid Oct. 23; the new distribution is separate. The board approved the special payment alongside the company's third-quarter results.

AFG said it had significant excess capital at Sept. 30 and described dividends and opportunistic share repurchases as part of its capital-management approach. The new declaration brings the company's special dividends declared since early 2021 to $59 per share.
