Anthropic President Daniela Amodei said AI should free people for relationships, as she criticized romantic chatbot use and OpenAI reported a wider ChatGPT ad rollout.
Speaking in an interview released Oct. 22, Amodei called AI romantic partners “a terrible use of AI.” She said AI girlfriends and boyfriends could deepen separation between people, linking that concern to her criticism of social media’s effect on direct contact. She identified text exchanges and online arguments as substitutes for face-to-face contact and organizing in local communities.
Amodei said AI could handle duties that do not need a person’s attention, giving people more capacity for relationships, curiosity and creative pursuits. She set a firm limit for Claude: Amodei said it “can never be your manager or your therapist or your partner.”
She also criticized ads selected using sensitive health details or emotionally revealing AI conversations, saying such targeting can “feel disrespectful.”
OpenAI reported Oct. 21 that ChatGPT advertising had reached 89 countries after 26 new markets were added. The company said more than 100,000 advertisers had used the platform for campaigns. OpenAI says it labels ads, keeps them separate from ChatGPT’s answers and does not let them shape responses.
On Feb. 4, Anthropic said Claude conversations would carry no advertising, including sponsored links alongside chats, and that advertisers would not shape its replies. Anthropic has also conducted advertising campaigns of its own and says its revenue comes from enterprise contracts and paid subscriptions.
