Doctors in Nigeria’s Anambra state are expanding Ebola awareness and seeking supplies for health facilities, using five zonal structures to support preparedness across the state, BusinessDay reported Wednesday.
The Nigerian Medical Association’s (NMA) Anambra chapter is carrying out the work during its 2026 Physicians Week, held Wednesday in Onitsha. Ndubuisi Arua said the annual event is being used to remind association members about Ebola symptoms and the need to remain alert to possible cases.
Radio and television broadcasts are part of the public campaign, Arua said. Members in Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Aguata and Ihiala are also running efforts on environmental sanitation, food hygiene and personal hygiene in local communities.
Arua said the association was working to get protective equipment, medicines and other consumables to hospitals, clinics and treatment centers across the state. He said members were ready to help government and residents prevent Ebola and provide treatment.
The Physicians Week event has the theme “Securing the Future of Medicine in Nigeria.” During a lecture there, Professor Igwebuike Onyiaorah said the country’s medical future depended on contributions from across the health system, not only doctors. He urged the federal government to raise health spending to 15% of the national budget. If that target could not be reached immediately, he suggested moving the allocation from 5% to 10% and using the funds carefully.
