The Anambra chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will mobilize more than 1 million votes for NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi in 2027 as it builds its campaign in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lists Obi and vice-presidential candidate Musa Mohammed Rabiu Kwankwaso on the NDC ticket. Its calendar schedules Nigeria’s presidential election for Jan. 16, 2027.

BusinessDay reported that NDC Anambra Chairman Ikem Uzoezie announced the target Wednesday in Awka during the inauguration of a 59-member campaign council. The chapter is also preparing a town hall event it calls the “Mother of All Rallies.”

Uzoezie said Obi’s previous presidential run as a Labour Party candidate drew more than 500,000 votes. He cited Obi’s national recognition as a reason for expecting greater support in the coming race, saying the chapter’s task was to turn that profile into votes in Anambra.

Afam Ogene, the House of Representatives member for Ogbaru Federal Constituency and leader of the NDC caucus, described the race as a chance for the South-East to secure the presidency. He argued that missing this opening could weaken the prospects of future presidential candidates from the region.

State Campaign Council Coordinator Ifeanyi Ibezi said organizers would build support from the grassroots across Anambra. He predicted Obi would receive 70% of the vote nationwide.

Uzoezie previously challenged APGA’s backing for President Bola Tinubu, arguing that hardship, insecurity and unemployment could increase support for political change. INEC’s calendar sets the presidential vote for Jan. 16, 2027.
