Anand Rathi Wealth Limited’s futures open interest across all contract months rose 21% on Oct. 19, but near-month prices fell for three of the five Indian stocks with double-digit position increases.
TBTflow’s figures, derived from National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) data, compare the end of the Oct. 19 session with Oct. 16, the previous trading day. The open-interest changes measure shares underlying outstanding positions across contract months. The price changes refer only to near-month futures.
Anand Rathi Wealth’s 21% increase was the largest in this group. Its near-month future gained 0.66%. ABB India Limited was the only other price gainer among the five: Its near-month future rose 2.41% as open interest across contract months increased 13.73%.
The other three near-month contracts declined despite increases in all-month open interest. The future for 360 ONE WAM Limited fell 1.81% as its open interest rose 13.61%. Waaree Energies Limited’s future lost 0.87% alongside a 12.31% increase in open interest, while Prestige Estates Projects Limited’s future slipped 0.82% as open interest gained 10.49%.
The distinction between contract months matters when comparing positions with prices. TBTflow’s breakdown shows that later-dated contracts accounted for 45.6% of Anand Rathi Wealth’s open interest on Oct. 19. An increase across all months therefore does not, by itself, show how positions changed in the near-month contract whose price is quoted.
The NSE defines open interest as derivative contracts that remain unsettled. Every futures position has a buyer and a seller, so an increase alone does not establish a bullish view. The figures do not identify the traders or explain why they held the positions.
The near-month contracts expire Oct. 27.
