Artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced on Sunday that it plans to allocate 5% of its shares to a newly established Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, reinforcing its commitment to AI safety, social responsibility, and public benefit initiatives.
The proposed equity allocation remains subject to shareholder approval. Under the plan, the fund could receive an additional 2% of company shares for every 50% increase in Anthropic's valuation above a predetermined baseline, subject to board approval.
The company has not disclosed the specific valuation thresholds that would trigger further allocations. However, the structure is designed to expand the fund's financial resources as Anthropic grows.
Anthropic said the initiative builds on its responsibilities as a public benefit corporation, where research into artificial intelligence safety, AI interpretability, and biomedical applications already forms part of its mission.
The company also provides discounted access to its Claude AI models for nonprofit organizations and scientific institutions.
Unlike conventional charitable foundations, the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund will operate as a wholly owned limited liability company. This arrangement is intended to provide greater flexibility in financing initiatives that address the broader economic and social consequences of artificial intelligence.
Potential activities include substantial donations to nonprofit organizations and direct financial assistance to affected communities.
One major focus is AI-driven labor market disruption, particularly the potential effects of automation on employment and workforce opportunities. Anthropic has already committed $200 million toward researching and addressing these challenges.
The company emphasized that shares held by the fund will not finance lobbying activities or political contributions, either in the United States or internationally.
Anthropic's charitable commitments extend beyond the new initiative. Its co-founders previously pledged to donate 80% of their personal equity holdings, while approximately half of its employees participate in an equity donation matching program.
Together, these commitments and the new fund are expected to dedicate roughly 20% of Anthropic's shares to public benefit purposes, with potential increases tied to future valuation growth.
Anthropic plans to disclose additional information about the fund's governance, equity allocation mechanisms, and valuation milestones in the coming months.
The AI developer also intends to publish a public benefit report detailing its progress, highlighting its efforts to balance commercial expansion with responsible artificial intelligence development.
