Anthropic's proposed IPO is drawing scrutiny to the economics of AI infrastructure, as private investor revenue figures and valuation talks meet falling model prices and costly cloud expansion.

Reuters reported that at an Oct. 14, 2026, meeting with prospective investors, Anthropic said revenue reached $16.8 billion in the third quarter, compared with $11.6 billion in the second, a 45% increase. Reuters said the company also told investors it was profitable on an adjusted basis. The figures came from a closed meeting, not a public quarterly earnings release.

Some attendees discussed a possible valuation of about $1.5 trillion, Reuters reported, below a prior expectation near $2 trillion for a November share sale. Neither figure represents a price set by Anthropic.

Cloud services help explain why the IPO discussion extends beyond the model maker. Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry and Google Cloud offer Claude alongside models from other developers, giving business customers access to multiple systems through cloud platforms.

For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported $42.2 billion in sales and $16.6 billion in operating income. Microsoft reported $59.3 billion in Microsoft Cloud revenue for its fiscal fourth quarter, 27% higher than a year earlier, while Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43%. Alphabet reported Google Cloud revenue of $24.8 billion for the second quarter ended June 30, up 82% year over year.

Price competition is visible in AI usage data. Citadel Securities' Aug. 18 analysis, drawing on Silicon Data, found that usage-weighted token prices had dropped 40% from the end of June 2026, while GPU rental markets remained firmer than at their June lows. Citadel noted that sparse, opaque pricing and usage measures limit what can be inferred from the figures. Enterprise Technology Research (ETR) said its September 2026 survey found that a majority of respondents used open-weight models; its summary also said firms were assigning routine work to less expensive models or plans.

Cloud expansion also requires large capital outlays. Amazon reported a $7.6 billion trailing-12-month free-cash-flow outflow through June 30, 2026, driven mainly by higher property and equipment purchases that Amazon said primarily reflected AI investment. Reuters separately reported that a confidential Anthropic IPO prospectus it reviewed described at least $518 billion in commitments for cloud services, computing and infrastructure over 10 years.

Anthropic said June 1, 2026, that it had confidentially submitted a draft Form S-1 to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The company said the share count and offering price were unset at that point. Reuters later reported some investors expected a November sale, but Anthropic has not confirmed an IPO date.
