NEW YORK, Nov. 13, 2017 -- SmartMetric, Inc. (OTCQB:SMME) – A Vietnamese security firm Bkav has just released the results of its research and testing of the Apple X phone in which they claim to have cracked Apple Face ID with 3-D printing including a paper print copy of the targets eyes. Allowing the Apple X facial recognition security to be easily fooled and unlocking of the phone relatively easy.
According to Bkav's research of Apple X, fixed, printed eyes can deceive Face ID. Apple patents had led researchers to believe that Face ID looked for eye movement. Not to mention the claims by Apple’s President who said as much at the launch of Apple X. Without it being able to detect real eyes from fake printed eyes, Face ID is left vulnerable not only simple mask spoofs, but also attacks that could unlock an iPhone X even if the owner is sleeping, restrained, or even dead.
Scanning the face of a dead phone owner is worrying from a security stand point, since it is a problem for Facial Recognition that Fingerprint Biometrics doesn’t have. Capacitive based fingerprint sensors use the conductivity of a live person’s fingerprint to cause a valid biometric read.
But more worrying than printed eyes fooling the phones facial recognition security, is the ability of a thief to grab a person’s phone out of the hand, point it to the face of the bewildered phone owner and presto, full access to the phone including its payments options is granted. So much for practical real-life security.
On their internet site, the Bkav researchers said, "Apple has done this not so well" "Face ID can be fooled by mask, which means it is not an effective security measure."
Other claims surrounding the “new facial recognition” technology such as being able to see a persons eyes through sunglasses is yet to be tested by researchers at Bkav.
This release is based on third party reports concerning research into the Apple X phone. SmartMetric has not validated the testing used as reported nor has SmartMetric conducted its own independent testing.
