Bafwasende health-zone chief Dr. Marcel Likilo said two rooms intended for suspected Ebola patients burned at a treatment center under construction, a facility that had not yet opened.

Actualite.cd reported Likilo’s account that guards intervened to control the fire. Kis24info and Reporter.cd described an attempted fire and cited a treating physician who said unidentified people threw stones at the site. Reporter.cd said no damage assessment had been communicated.

Actualite.cd reported that International Medical Corps was building the center. Likilo told ACP on Oct. 5 that it was planned to have 20 beds, including eight for suspected cases and 12 for confirmed cases.

Actualite.cd also reported that health workers had left Bafwasende and suspected patients were being taken to Nia-Nia. Likilo said some young people believed medical staff were spreading Ebola, describing this as part of community resistance.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in an Oct. 25 post that a nurse was killed and another health worker seriously injured during an Ebola-alert response in Bafwasende on Oct. 24.

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) listed 77 new confirmed cases nationwide in SitRep No. 168, dated Oct. 29. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said the last patients with confirmed diagnoses had left its Mongbwalu treatment center; EconoTimes previously covered the discharge milestone.
