In a move to foster blockchain industry, two Australian Senators earlier this month formed a bipartisan group “Parliamentary Friends of Blockchain.”
The announcement was made by co-convenors, Senator Jane Hume (Lib, VIC) and Senator Sam Dastyari (Lab, NSW) at an event held in Parliament House. According to official website of the Parliament of Australia, Parliamentary Friends of Blockchain will
“[P]rovide a forum for Members and Senators to meet and interact with relevant stakeholders on matters relating to the future of Blockchain.”
Senator Hume said that the opportunities presented by blockchain technology for government, academia and the private sector are enormous. Senator Dastyari said that the “question for Australia is are we going to follow or are we going to lead?”
The Australian Digital Commerce Association (ADCA) has welcomed the initiative. Nick Giurietto, Chief Executive of ADCA also addressed the meeting and said that the group will provide a significant opportunity to enhance dialogue between policymakers and industry.
“[S]mart countries will take advantage of blockchain technology to renew and strengthen their economies and cement their place among a small group of global economic leaders,” Giurietto said. “I hope that the formation of the Parliamentary Friends of Blockchain comes to be seen as a key moment when Australian business and government came together to press the accelerator pedal on blockchain adoption.”
