The BBC expects its workforce to shrink by 1,800 to 2,000 jobs as it targets £500 million in annual savings by 2028 and prepares to end three scheduled broadcast services.

The employment range, set out in the British public broadcaster’s written evidence to a parliamentary committee, describes the expected reduction in its overall job count. The service closures announced Oct. 20 are part of that existing savings effort.

BBC Three and BBC Scotland are due to stop broadcasting as television channels in spring 2027. BBC Radio 4 Extra will also cease radio broadcasts. Some programming will remain available on BBC iPlayer or BBC Sounds. The BBC has not set specific end dates or said how much the three changes will save.

The BBC’s news division has proposed closing about 100 roles to save roughly £5.5 million, as detailed in earlier coverage of the broadcaster’s service closures. BBC News put the expected loss from the Scotland channel change at about 10 posts, in addition to 60 role closures announced earlier in 2026.

The broadcaster has begun consulting affected teams and unions. Viewers who rely on scheduled broadcasts will need to find other ways to access affected programming. Reporting Scotland: News at Seven will end when the BBC Scotland television channel closes and will not move to iPlayer, BBC News reported.

Equity said the end of BBC Radio 4 Extra’s broadcast service could reduce repeat income for audio artists. The union said only some of the service’s content will be available on BBC Sounds. BBC Director-General Matt Brittin cited financial pressure and changing audience habits when announcing the measures.

The BBC says its savings target represents roughly 10% of its cost base. BBC Three’s planned exit reverses its 2022 return to broadcast television after six years online. Ofcom, the U.K. communications regulator, approved BBC Three’s return to television partly to reach younger people who were unlikely to watch TV online.

The next planned update is due in early 2027, when BBC News director Rachel Jupp is expected to outline further savings measures.
