Bangladesh’s military said troops rescued at least 57 people, including Rohingya refugees, in a border firefight near Myanmar on Nov. 5 that killed one soldier.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Md Titash Sheikh, 27, was shot in the left shoulder during the clash in Rongikhali, Teknaf, on the night of Nov. 5. He later died of his injuries.

ISPR said troops operated in Rongikhali’s hills after a tip-off that about 120 Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshis had been abducted. ISPR put the suspected trafficker group at 15 to 16 people.

AFP reported that most of Bangladesh’s more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees fled Myanmar after the 2017 military crackdown. It said trafficking networks around Cox’s Bazar target refugees seeking work or a route out of the country.
