Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau said political conditions favor President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election, while separately saying Kano Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf’s move to the governing party could improve the state’s development prospects.
BusinessDay reported that Barau spoke Monday at the inauguration of All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign committees representing Dawakin Tofa, Tofa and Rimin Gado, three local government areas in Kano State. He urged the groups to build support for APC candidates across the 2027 elections. The committees include party leaders, current and former lawmakers, local officials, new members and elders, the outlet reported.
Barau cited views from political analysts and Nigeria’s current political climate as reasons for his confidence in Tinubu’s re-election. He also argued that work from Tinubu’s first term would yield results if voters returned him to office.
Yusuf moved from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC. Barau described the defection as strategic, saying it could improve Kano’s chances of attracting development opportunities. He argued that Kano’s large electorate merits federal attention, noting that only Lagos has more registered voters.
Barau also said shared party affiliation among elected officials at local, state and federal levels could improve the APC’s position at the polls and support development in Kano.
The remarks add a Kano perspective to competing political alliances around Tinubu’s bid, including support from an opposition figure and APC governors’ pledge to campaign for their party’s candidates. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lists Jan. 16, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
