British lender Barclays said a planned share repurchase of up to £500 million would lower its common equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio to 14.0% pro forma, as the bank advances its shareholder-return plan.

The bank’s reported ratio was 14.2% on Sept. 30, compared with 14.3% at the end of June. The 14.0% figure reflects the proposed repurchase in a pro forma calculation; it was not Barclays’ reported quarter-end ratio.

Barclays said the buyback is part of its 2026–2028 capital-return plan. Announced distributions to shareholders totaled £2.8 billion year to date, up 46% from the same period a year earlier. The bank cited strong organic capital generation and its 14.2% CET1 ratio in support of the repurchase.

The announcement follows quarterly earnings and trading results covered in EconoTimes’ earlier report on Barclays’ results. Barclays announced a separate £500 million buyback in the third quarter of 2025.
