The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is seeking legal advice on its Bauchi State governorship ticket after its listed candidate, Ibrahim Muhammad Kashim, said he quit the party.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) names Kashim and running mate Tata Alhaji on its published candidate list for Bauchi State. The list does not establish what effect Kashim’s resignation has on his candidacy.

In a signed statement distributed Oct. 19 and reproduced by Arise News, Kashim said his membership had ended Oct. 16. He named no new party and did not say whether he would continue his bid. “Our political journey is far from over,” Kashim wrote.

Bauchi NDC Chairman Abdullahi Misau said the party would consult its lawyers and seek guidance from INEC, Premium Times reported.

Kashim served as secretary to the Bauchi State Government under Gov. Bala Mohammed. In 2022, he told The Guardian he had given up a Peoples Democratic Party governorship ticket so Mohammed could seek re-election.

INEC has scheduled the governorship vote for Feb. 6, 2027.
