Hubert Aiwanger, Bavaria’s deputy minister-president and minister for economic affairs, regional development and energy, was found dead in a Berlin hotel room, prompting an inquiry into the cause and circumstances of his death.

Bavaria’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy confirmed Wednesday that Aiwanger died in Berlin at age 55. The ministry said he had planned several appointments there for FREIE WÄHLER.

Berlin police and prosecutors said Aiwanger was found dead Wednesday, Nov. 4, in a hotel room in the Mitte district. The Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office and the sixth homicide commission of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA) are investigating. Their inquiry aims to establish the circumstances of his death and exclude possible third-party involvement. Authorities have not announced a cause of death.

According to his ministry biography, Aiwanger had held his two senior state posts since Nov. 12, 2018. The biography dates his leadership of FREIE WÄHLER to 2006 in Bavaria and 2010 at the federal level.

Bavaria’s Minister-President Markus Söder said in a statement on the state government’s portal: “We are all deeply shocked. Our thoughts are first with his family and children.”
