Serbia’s Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade said an embassy guard killed an attacker after a knife attack, and an initial review found the gunfire justified as self-defense.
At about 7:15 p.m. ET Tuesday (12:15 a.m. Wednesday in Belgrade, CET, UTC+1), a person dressed in black opened the guard booth at Israel’s embassy and approached Serbian Gendarmerie officer D.S. with two knives, the office said. The attacker threw one knife, cutting D.S.’s left cheek. D.S. fired several times, killing the attacker at the scene, prosecutors said.
The office’s on-site assessment concluded that firing the service weapon was warranted for self-defense. Investigators were still working to reconstruct the full sequence of events, it said.
The incident follows an attack on a Gendarmerie officer outside the same embassy in June 2024. Serbia’s government said prosecutors classified that assault as a terrorist act. Then-Interior Minister Ivica Dačić declared a red terrorism threat level afterward.
