Bitcoin (BTC) is facing mounting selling pressure as the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) climbs to its highest level in 18 months, creating additional challenges for the cryptocurrency market.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin was trading near $82,490, down 1.62% over the past 24 hours. The cryptocurrency has also declined 4.61% over the past week, bringing its market capitalization to approximately $1.65 trillion.
Technical indicators suggest that bearish momentum is strengthening. Bitcoin's five-minute BTC/USDT chart shows a decline from above $84,200 to around $82,460, forming consecutive lower highs and lower lows.
Meanwhile, increasing short positions indicate weakening market sentiment, with insufficient spot buying demand to counter the growing bearish pressure.
The U.S. Dollar Index recently surpassed 102.50, reaching approximately 102.55, its highest level since April 2025. The index climbed from around 102.12, establishing a bullish pattern characterized by higher highs and higher lows.
Several economic factors are supporting the dollar's rally. Elevated oil prices are weighing on major energy-importing economies, particularly Europe and Japan, weakening their currencies against the greenback.
Additionally, expectations of prolonged restrictive Federal Reserve monetary policy have strengthened demand for the dollar.
Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack emphasized Monday that maintaining restrictive interest rates remains necessary to address increasingly widespread inflation pressures.
Investors are now awaiting Wednesday's U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, which could influence expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve's next monetary policy decisions.
Although Bitcoin does not consistently move inversely to the dollar, sustained dollar strength can reduce investor appetite for risk-sensitive assets, including cryptocurrencies.
Derivatives market data further highlights Bitcoin's vulnerability.
According to CoinGlass, Bitcoin futures trading volume reached $43.55 billion over the past 24 hours, while total open interest stood at $52.25 billion, indicating substantial leveraged exposure.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin liquidations totaled $54.76 million, including $43.22 million in long positions and $11.54 million in short positions.
Long liquidations accounted for approximately 79% of the total, highlighting the difficulties facing bullish traders.
With the dollar strengthening, leveraged positions under pressure, and inflation data approaching, Bitcoin's near-term price outlook remains uncertain as traders assess whether buying demand can stabilize the market.
