Bithumb is assessing whether customer records were included in a personal information leak after an intruder accessed an employee mobile groupware platform, leaving the scope of the incident undetermined.
The exchange said it detected the incident Tuesday, Oct. 27, and notified the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) that day. Employees use the platform to coordinate workplace activities and communicate.
Bithumb said its early review found employee information in the leaked material. The inquiry has not established whether customer records were also affected.
The exchange has not given a count of potential victims or specified which data was involved. The way the intruder reached the employee platform has not been disclosed.
Separately, South Korean authorities are examining a broader set of cybersecurity incidents at financial companies. Daishin Securities and Mirae Asset Global Investments reported separate security incidents on Oct. 28.
