Hackers’ attacks on supermarket freezers in several countries and bomb threats that grounded flights have raised fears of suspected hybrid attacks in Europe, Al Jazeera reported.
Al Jazeera said the threats prompted heightened security at airports this week. Authorities found no explosives, and the broadcaster described the warnings as likely hoaxes. The attacks left freezer temperatures higher and food spoiled, the broadcaster said.
Al Jazeera’s Saturday report did not name anyone as responsible. It raised questions about whether the incidents were linked, without establishing a connection. The program also cited Italy’s statement that civilian infrastructure in Europe is “under attack.”
In an Oct. 28 opinion piece for the Kyiv Independent, Czech lawmaker Marek Zenisek argued that fragmented national responses benefit Russia. He urged governments to agree on possible shared responses ahead of future incidents, saying that handling events separately consumes resources and leaves officials unsure how to respond next. His argument predated the incidents in Al Jazeera’s report and did not assign responsibility for them. EconoTimes previously covered Zenisek’s call for shared European responses.
